I was just adding some information to the Workouts For Athletes site. It hasn’t been a high volumn website and for the past year has been primarily targeted to the occupational athletes of the Everett Fire Department.

I was adding some thoughts I have had on a book I’ve been reading, “Practical Programming for strength training” by Rippetoe and Kilgore. In the current section there is much talk about explosive or near explosive (fast) training utilization as it better utilizes the full neuropathways to active more muscle into action.

Makes sense as with speed you end up in a get ‘er done mode. No screwing around so full use of all appropriate neuro innervasions is going to happen. For athletes this is essential and for all others a safe but similar action is beneficial as part of your periodization.

Below is a blog post from Functional Path Training, which had this little line that matched my above mentioned book reading. “Certainly force is part of the equation, but very slow heavy overloaded movements serve to dull the nervous system and interfere with the high speed coordination demanded in performance.”…………… Therefore I share.

Resistance

If in doubt add a load and slow the movement down! If a ten-kilo weight vest is good for weighted sprints then a thirty-kilo vest is obviously three times as good. Why? Adding load is very quantifiable; it makes it easy to measure progress. Adding load slows movement down and makes it easier to see, but does it transfer? If I can perform the run, jump or throw with more resistance certainly there is measurable progress in terms of handling the task with additional load, but what is really happening? There is definitely a point of diminishing returns and a trade-off. Ultimately performance is about expressing speed within the constraints of the technical demands of the skill. Certainly force is part of the equation, but very slow heavy overloaded movements serve to dull the nervous system and interfere with the high speed coordination demanded in performance. Seek optimum loads that match the dynamics of the sport or event, not maximum. Beware of the old beat your head against the wall syndrome – it is hard when are doing it and it always feels better when you stop. Rather than having your athletes feel like elephants after they do a session of sled pulls or harness running they should feel like big butterfly’s, light explosive and FAST! Find a load that achieves this. There are no magic formulas; just a good coaching eye and a heavy dose of common sense. Once again are you making them tired or making them better?

rolling at a recent grappling tournament. So sorry, but this blog will end up being the final resting location as the kids’ website is down…. See below his four matches, including the Arlington Submission Challenge Teen Championship match in its entirety in the following two videos.

Congrats Noah - Three wins by various submissions and one by points.

While discussing or showing off Noah’s victories, pertinent to this blog would be discussing the training that goes behind training a mixed martial artist. There are several options out there including full certifications from organizations such as NESTA to multiple workshops both online and practical based.

From back in the late nineties when group fitness kickboxing became popular, our FIT Launch company began running workshops on it “Jump Into The Ring“. Most recently that training has been tweaked from group fitness and kickboxing based to more of an interval based program designed for participants and clients wanting to train similarly to a “real” mixed martial artist.

When it comes to training the real mma students, I believe training as a CSCS would be the most appropriate. And, with that checking out targeted workshops will help zero the conditioning coach in to the most appropriate movements and energy systems for the mma athlete. (maybe I’m a little prejudice being one?)

Who’s been through training programs on working with mma athletes? What are your thoughts on keys to the working with these specialty athletes? How do you modify those programming options for your general population clients?

… interested to know…

But, do you have the ability to workout with the Intensity of a Navy Seal for 10-60 seconds?

You may not aim to be the same as a Navy Seal, but by utilizing short work bouts followed by rest periods you may find it much more efficient and maybe even fun when trying to achieve your fitness goals. Many studies have shown the benefit of exercise programs similar to this idea of navy seal intensity interspersed with active rest over the good old

Hang in There

standard of long slow distance (jogging, elliptical, stairmaster, walking, etc.)

As a matter of fact one study showed that an “interval training group” had 9 times greater subcutaneous fat loss than an endurance training group.

Take a look around and make sure your trainer is providing this type of training to you from time to time. They are not there just to count your 10 reps for each exercise. They are there to help you efficiently and safely reach your fitness goals. Interval training with Intensities similar to a Navy Seal (yet relative to you) is a sure fire element to get you down that path.

I manage a few different blogs, and I am no where near a professional writer or creative with the pen (keyboard). That being the case I often find getting creative with my blog somewhat difficult.

Because of my above mentioned handicap it would be most easy to simply dump the blog idea altogether. But, I’m told that would be the wrong move by every internet marketer alive. I also find the specific blogs a simple location to address specific ideas, changes, or issues with our various fitness industry programs.

So, being the resourceful guy I am… oops, that’s a different story. Today I was fortunate to take a look at one of my RSS feeds at just the right time on small business that happened to give a mention to a company with a cool blogging content assistance program.

I was quickly on my way to check out Zemanta.

No affiliate relationship or commission here. I was just so impressed with some of the features in this tool, which I could easily add as a FireFox add-on, that I want to mention it to the Fit Pros who keep track of things we have going on…. This also makes great worthwhile content for me in making a blog post. I’m using it on this post and tried it first at our nutrition solution blog site.

Zemanta is a tool that looks over your shoulder while you blog and gives you tips and advice, suggests related content and pictures and makes sure your posts get promoted as they deserve to be…

(From Zemanta) YOUR kind of Assistant…

Zemanta bloggers all get a great tool to help them create content and drive inbound traffic. But, we know that every blogger is different, so there are different ways you can use Zemanta, depending on your styles and interests. If you don’t see your area of interest bellow, drop us an email and let us know how you want to use Zemanta.

The excitement over Swine (H1N1) Flu isn’t anywhere near ending. The slow release of vaccine and the steady growth in all types of flu’s, cold’s, and allergies with the Fall season has left many confused and worried.

In the Spring when the first cases were reported out of Mexico, there was a lot of concern from our fitness professionals scheduled to travel to resorts in that part of the world. With the swine flu now reaching most all areas of the world, the concern has changed to personal prevention and telling the difference between more common seasonal ailments and those produced through this new flu strain.

A quick Google search will provide you a great deal of information. Following I have included a nice side by side chart found on the FitSugar site, that displays differing symptoms in the flu vs cold.

I’m not the Doctor nor producer of this chart, but it does appear very consistent with much of the related information I found in researching this topic. Do further educate your self on this topic and consult your physician if you have specific question.

For the Fitness Professional enjoying a working vacation or providing services in your own community, utilizing recommended precautions and knowing the differences in these illnesses can at the least reduce a bit of stress, which we know is good for all of us.

I’m sorry this transformation couldn’t happen on the “big shave” day (Friday), but joining you from here was the next best option I could muster, and the kids really enjoyed participating.

My challenge with this cut is nowhere near yours, but your public display of courage in this battle has been inspiring to myself and our entire family. Positive thoughts and many prayers to you…. Shelly says “Get A Mammogram!”
